“Colorado Velvet”©2001

Every
ten or fifteen years if you are diligent and you are blessed with timing, and
you have a place to go, something like this comes along. In the front range of
Colorado you can find an infinite array of wildlife. In the foothills you can
find Elk, Deer, Bobcat, Cougar, and a myriad of other species. Photography in
Nature is sometimes cut and dried in front of you in a matter of minutes. It may
be something that you have waited for over ten years. It is a lot of how you
play it and sometimes circumstance. The nice bucks were crossing a field and
dropped down into an arroyo. I captured a couple frames before they disappeared.
I moved slowly down but across from where I seen them and could not find them.
Then I moved way down from where they were in hopes that they didn’t go over
the ridge and down the other side. Well, I came upon some track and it looked
like they had crossed in front of me so I figured they were gone. So I headed
back up the arroyo and much to my surprise they had doubled back on me and some
were lying down and some were feeding. I grabbed two more photos and they all
trotted down the hill and stopped. When I got my composure I managed to capture
this once in a lifetime shot. A shot that I will never forget because it was a
hand held shot in thick cover with a 300 f2.8, I can’t even tell you what the
shutter speed was because you wouldn’t believe me anyway. And what a gift it
is to have the chance to see and capture that second in time, with this regal
display of - “Colorado Velvet”.
Hope you enjoy it!
Thank You,
